POMPEII
Pompeii was a commercial port along the Mediterranean Sea
with a population of 20,000, than the Mount Vesuvius eruption
of 79 A.D. trapped thousands but preserved everything quite
well. It was rediscovered in the 1600s, excavations began
in 1748. Only about a third of the city has been excavated,
about 30 acres.
